Recreation Center skyway water leak Jan 2, 2018

Sprinkler pipe break
At approximately 4 am on January 2, 2018 two sprinkler head T fittings broke inside the skyway between Cooke Hall and the Recreation Sports Center. The leak was apparently caused by a ventilation damper malfunction that allowed the skyway to cool and the sprinkler pipes to freeze.

The Recreation Center video cameras detected the water leak which was turned off by FM employees in approximately 15 minutes.

Water entered the Cook Hall elevator shaft and the Recreation Center elevator shaft inside the recreation center. These elevators will be inspected.

DEHS (Mike Buck and Neil Carlson) responded to the incident after FM staff at the Mechanical Engineering water event mentioned the incident at the Rec Center.

Three floors and a small part of the locker room area of the recreation center were affected. Primary water damage affected, duct insulation, ceiling tiles, some walls and ceilings both tiles and sheet rock.  The north volleyball gym sustained water damage to a small section of the court near the main entrance to the court. A squash court also sustained water damage.  Carpet tile replacement will be needed due to the nature of the sprinkler water.

Mavo will be assisting FM and rec center staff on the cleanup.
