Bell Museum staff begin water extraction and cleanup in the basement.

FM truck extracted 500+ gallons of water
Tom's FM custodial crew responded quickly followed by Todd in the truck-mount wet vac.
After Paul D. was on the scene he determined that we needed Mavo and dispatched them.

On scene were Neil Carlson DEHS, Masoud Mohsenian, Joan Gore ABATEMENT, Dana Saurey MAVO. Marty Moen BELL MUSEUM and his staff.

DEM and Van Anh Thai were notified of the event.

Elevator pit in the area had minimal water damage.  Monday, 7/14/2014 the pit will be scheduled for cleaning.

13:00 Meeting 7/11/2014

Clean Response will run dehumidifiers down no lower than 50% RH because art needs to be stored in a narrow range.

Tile and mastic under carpeting is ACM but we expect to be able to save the carpet. FM hazmat is testing the small amount of sheetrock to be  removed.  Mavo and Clean Response will finish up this afternoon and will run de-humidifiers through the weekend.
FM custodians were on site until 1:30p. Mavo and Clean Response is now on site performing final extraction, running de-humidifiers and removing baseboard and sheetrock as per directed by Neil Carson.

Paul D. called BSAC and had them run the air handlers through the weekend to support the de-humidification process.
Marty Moen - Bell Museum is fully apprised of all aspects of the operation.

Mavo on site Supervisor: Mike White 612-396-1832

Tom McArtle will attend the status meeting Monday 7/14/2014 1pm on second floor conference room in Bell Museum.

Additional non water damage related pre existing mold cleanup will occur in room 76 as part of a separate project.

Additional notes from Marty Moen:

Hi folks---

Here are my notes…shout out corrections as needed.  The contact list is at the bottom.

Asbestos / Hazardous Materials
We think the only asbestos in the water damaged area is in insulation around pipes in the basement rooms.  These will need to be dried out and assessed by Masoud next week.  A portion of the wall board in the back hallway (104CC) will be cut away and tested for asbestos.

Elevator
The freight elevator will be out of service Monday morning to allow for the pit to be vacuumed.  No long-term problems are anticipated.

Dehumidification
Mavo Systems will have staff onsite over the weekend and into next week to check dehumidifiers. The priority rooms are: Rm 160, Rm. 80a, Rm. 80c, and Rm. 80d.  Second priority rooms are: Rm. 175, Rm. 150, Rm. 76, and Rm. 80d.  Goal is to keep all rooms at 50-55% RH.  In general, the entire basement needs dehumidification.

Display units in the West Gallery (Rm. 175) are up on blocks.  These will need to be rotated after 48 hrs. to encourage complete carpet drying.  The temporary wall panels also need to be moved.

Weekend Access
Jennifer Menken (612-845-5148) will be onsite this weekend to coordinate with Mavo Systems---Mike White(612-396-1832). Dan Borash (612-626-3790) is the weekend supervisor for FM…Terry MacNeil (612-624-3432) is the on call supervisor.

Electrical
Power to the baseboard outlets in affected rooms has been cut.  Basement lights, especially in Rm. 76, received considerable water damage…but they've been drained and no serious issues are expected.

Carpentry
Mavo Systems is pulling the vinyl and carpet base board in the first floor rooms (175, 150).  University FM will provide replacement materials--Mavo will install.  Mavo also will clean surface mold in Rm. 76 as best they can.

Next Steps
The carpet and walls in Rm. 175 and Rm. 150 will be assessed on Monday to see if it is salvageable.  We are hopeful that it can.  If everything goes well, these rooms might be ready for public entry by July 21.  If the carpet has to go, the Bell will need to remove the Lion's Mane exhibit asap.

This group will meet again on Monday (7/14) at 1 p.m. in Rm. 280 Bell Museum.

Quick #s
  • Water damage was first reported at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2014.
  • A ruptured water hose in an exhibit area (Rm. 140) was the source.
  • We estimate between 1500 and 2000 gallons of water were removed.
  • Approximately 8,800 sq ft. of space was affected to some degree.
