Cold room cleanup in AHC

DEHS, FM Haz Mat and AHC building management have put some effort into reducing problems with fungal growth in coolers.  This includes proper maintenance and cleaning.  Most of this information is include on a fact sheet on mold growth in coolers.

Fungal growth on a dusty light fixture

fungal growth on pipe insulation and wall

Fungal growth on dusty light fixtures, pipe insulation and dusty walls occurs frequently.   In areas controlled by occupants paper labels, books, cardboard, cardboard microscope slide holders are frequently colonized by mold.  Growth also occurs on dusty items or equipment including safety shields, stir plates, dusty edges of plastic containers.

Prevention:

Place items in plastic containers and include desiccant packs if practical.  This makes it easier to keep the surfaces clean.

Monthly clean the dust off the items in the cooler.  Set the same day of the week each month to routinize the cleaning and post this on the cooler door.  Floor cleaning should also be done on a monthly schedule

Use microfiber cloths to clean the surfaces.  A minimum of one per cooler.  The following solutions can be added to microfiber cloth.  They are listed from mild to strong.

 Dreft solution
Quaternary ammonia
70% ethyl alcohol
10% bleach

FM custodians and supervisors have raised concerns about working in the space and inadvertently knocking an item off the shelf while moping.  Given the tight space and their minimal training it is a legitimate concern. AHC Building management and FM Safety will need to make a determination with regard to who cleans the floors.  The elevated surfaces will need to be cleaned by the people using the cooler.  In spaces where multiple groups use a cooler please assign a person from each group to take responsibility for cleaning.

Please refer problems noted with condensation and water to FM who will initiate repairs.

If growth is noted throughout the cooler, then FM abatement will  need to clean the cooler.
