| Area of water damaged ceiling 5th floor RAR on east end of VCRC |
Text page CAD 11:20pm on Tuesday October 7, 2014: Please call UMPD dispatch regarding a water leak at VCRC.
Notes from Jerry Busse and David Paulu:
David:
Jerry Busse indicated that a chilled water valve failed and leaked water. Most of the water was contained to public areas on floors 2-5. He is working on contact with RAR for some animal rooms that are impacted. We determined that a morning response would suffice for determination of wet building materials(mostly brick and plaster with uncarpeted floors). I should have more details from Jerry by morning which I will forward. I also spoke with Nick Greco who concurred with this approach.
Jerry:
After I prematurely had my overnight mechanics start winterizing coils in 069, Karen Collins and I discussed today that we should re-fill the building cooling coils for the next couple of weeks. Gary Trudeau and Jim Hamberg were in the process of doing so with SUP016 this evening when we had a suspected failure of the isolation valves to the cooling coil. Additionally, they had not checked to ensure that the drain hoses were still connected properly, which exacerbated the issue.
This caused water to flow from 634 to the floors below, primarily affecting the public areas on the east side of VCRC (069) and the connection door and areas adjacent in K/E (143). No offices or labs in 143 appear to have been affected, just the west entry area to 069.
Offices that are known to be affected in 069 are 227, 337, 339 with ceiling tile damage and water dripping onto the floor; more public space drips and wet ceiling tiles are visible including outside of 408, 333, 228. Some RAR spaces on 5th floor are also affected, however we do not have access to many spaces on 4th or 5th floor so we are unable to complete a full inventory tonight.
I spoke with both Nick and Mike from DEM; Nick is planning on being out on Wednesday morning. David Paulu from DEHS was contacted and will be out tomorrow to investigate as well. RAR on-call pager was contacted and given a list of possible affected rooms; no return call was received following the initial event description and list. Karen Collins was notified.
Gary and Jim will monitor the area overnight and continue with clean-up in the public space; Senay Emnetu and Cande Moralez both had staff assisting with clean-up.

W002215026 created to capture clean-up costs.
Mike Buck and Neil Carlson completed a water damage assessment on 10/8/2014 from 0800 to 0900 working with Karen Collins and John Stoffel.

Lab in 408 had heavy ceiling tile damage with some light fixtures involved. There were some water damaged supplies and lab electronics. Small sections of the wall were marked for removal.
Fifth floor RAR area had water damaged plaster ceiling along the far east end of the corridor and in a lab office. FM Haz mat will evaluate above the ceiling prior to opening up access panels and using fans dry out.
