Middlebrook Hall bldg #208 sprinkler release 3/7/2015

Location of sprinkler head.  Resident bumped into the head and caused it to release water.
22:05 - Sprinkler head broke on the 8th floor of Middlebrook Hall Saturday 3/7/2015.

22:22 - CAD notice sent out.

MFD/UMPD and FEM electrician on scene.  MFD initially had difficulty finding the sprinkler shut off valve for the  eighth floor.

Middlebrook staff kept the bulk of the water from entering the other dorm rooms by placing towels at residents doors and pushing the water to the bathroom drains.

The carpets in the room were extracted, cleaned, treated with Microban two times. Floor fans were running continuously to dry the carpet and furniture was moved frequently with some of it put on wood blocks.

Middlebrook will now be posting the location of the sprinkler shut offs for each floor on the fire alarm panels to aid the fire department.

Sprinkler head cage was in place prior to damage.
Housing may wish to consider restricting the installation of bunk beds in close proximity to the sprinkler heads.  This is the second sprinkler to release within the past month due to a room occupant bumping a sprinkler head near their bunk bed.

The third sprinkler head release in Middlebrook was in a closet similar to this one.
No specific cause for this type of release has been identified.
